Fixture trends change quickly, so it doesn\u2019t take long for your once-trendy fixtures to look dated. And you don\u2019t need to be a plumber or electrician to do this. Brand new fluffy white towels, a candle, and a little life (like bamboo, artful branches, or an orchid) are all you need to go from bathroom to spa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-install-crown-molding\">Install crown molding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing says <em>I live in a fancy house<\/em> like crown molding. Like a fresh coat of paint, installing crown molding is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to elevate a room. You can rent a saw and a nail gun if you don\u2019t own them already. Pick up some ready-to-go molding and some finishing nails and you\u2019re in business. Simple floating shelves in small spaces, especially bathrooms, are inexpensive and take just minutes to install.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or try this killer hack for easy \u201cbuilt-in\u201d bookshelves: Pick up a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/p\/billy-bookcase-white-00263850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BILLY Bookcases<\/a> at IKEA\u00ae and add crown molding to make them look floor-to-ceiling. This makes a great focal point in the living room or home office!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clean-dryer-vents\">Clean dryer vents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter is the perfect time to tackle some of those deep cleaning tasks around the house, and cleaning the dryer vents is about as easy it gets. It\u2019s also a matter of safety: dryers are responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usfa.fema.gov\/prevention\/outreach\/clothes_dryers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2,900 home fires<\/a> each year, and dirty vents are the leading cause.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just move the dryer away from the wall, unplug it, disconnect the vent, and vacuum the inside of the vent with a hose attachment. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can buy a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ROunc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dryer vent cleaning kit<\/a> for about $20 that extends your reach in the duct to 30 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seal-up-drafts-around-windows-and-doors\">Seal up drafts around windows and doors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, one essential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymove.com\/seasonal-maintenance\/winter-home-maintenance-checklist\/\">winter checklist item<\/a> is to check all doors and windows for drafts. Your energy bill will thank you \u2014 I saved about $50 each month after sealing my windows with film insulation. There are several things you can do if you find cold air coming in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3IGo48b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Window film insulation kit<\/a>: These large plastic sheets fit around the entire window, and can be sealed with a hairdryer.&nbsp;<\/li><li>If the cold air seems to be coming in through the door or window frame, a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3GEYKg0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caulk sealant<\/a> is your best bet. (You\u2019ll need a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3GADVSY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">caulk gun<\/a>, too.)<\/li><li>A no-fuss option is to install <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Xv7mwJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foam insulation strips<\/a> around the edges of windows and doors.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ZvBee9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Insulated thermal curtains<\/a> can help keep the heat inside your home where it belongs.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-give-carpets-and-upholstery-a-deep-clean\">Give carpets and upholstery a deep clean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how diligent you are about keeping your house clean, carpet and upholstery inevitably starts to fade over time. The best way to keep your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mymove.com\/carpet-cleaning\/carpet-cleaning\/\">carpet<\/a> looking fresh is to do an annual deep cleaning with a steam cleaner. You can buy one yourself for <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3HRbLUf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around $100<\/a>, or rent one through places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowes.com\/l\/about\/carpetcleanerrental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lowe\u2019s<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homedepot.com\/c\/floor_cleaning_equipment_rental#carpet-cleaners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Home Depot<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have a carpet cleaner, start by moving all the furniture out of the room and spot cleaning any noticeable stains with a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3HMkZBf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spot remover<\/a>. Next you\u2019ll want to vacuum the carpet or upholstery to get rid of as much dirt as possible before your steam clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to get steamy. Follow the instructions on your cleaner and go slow, allowing the steam to work its way through the entire carpet.
